Cleveland Cavaliers…Looking For A Title

In 1970, the Cleveland Cavaliers became a part of the National Basketball Association. Although their first season was a dismal failure, the team rallied and gradually improved in the following years, even making it to the playoffs in the 75-76 season. The series that year is still known by those who remember as the “Miracle of Richfield.”

Poor decisions made by a new owner in the early eighties lost the Cavaliers both games and local support; however, this only lasted a few years. The team was sold once again in 1983 prompting a change in the team’s colors and the official adoption of the nickname the “Cavs” used by fans for years beforehand.

The new owners brought about more than just a new look. They also brought a new era of success. Starting in the mid eighties and lasting until 1993, player and coaching changes turned the Cleveland Cavaliers into a winning team and constant contender in the playoffs.

A steady decline in the team’s ability to win games prompted another rebirth. The acquisition of LeBron James in 2003 signaled the beginning of the new era, which once again came with a color change for the team, this time back to their original wine and gold, with the addition of navy blue and a new logo. 2007 saw them to their first division title, and the years since then have been fairly successful, although they have yet to win a championship.

Quicken Loans Arena, or “The Q” is home of the Cleveland Cavaliers. Formerly known as Gund Arena, it is located in downtown Cleveland. With seating for 20,500 people, the arena also has state of the arts scoreboards, graphics, video, and audio systems.

The Cleveland Cavaliers are heroes in their town not only on the court, but in the community as well. They are active in many youth charities and outreach programs, including their own foundation and various foundations started by individual team members. They do everything from donate tickets and time, to teaming up with other organizations to promote awareness programs such as “National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Week.”

The team’s mascot, Moondog, has a history not only with the team, but also within the area. Cleveland is known as the home of Rock and Roll, after radio announcer Alan Freed coined the term in the 1950’s. Calling himself Moondog, the DJ created a legend in Cleveland that has lasted to this day. The loveable pooch who shares the nickname with Freed is found out in the community, at the games, and even has his own Facebook page.

A team on the rise, the Cavaliers get better with every season and every game. The future is looking bright for this team, pleasing both the players and their fans. The Cleveland Cavaliers are definitely entertaining and worth the trip to the arena.
